Use “Social” Media For Social Gold!
“Social” media is social. That is why it is called “social.” Social media is all about the relationships. That is why the people are on Facebook 4 1/2 hours every week on average. That is why they are engaging on blogs and by Twitter. They desire the interaction with human beings.
Business wants to reach these people to sell them products and services. If “selling” is all that the business has to offer them, then social media is not going to be that lucrative for them. However, if business can wrap it’s head around what people want and then give it to them, they will have a never ending supply of loyal customers.
The key is engagement.
So we have tried Google Ad words and Facebook Ads and they get some response. Some have tried posting their material and if the material is done right and they have a large network, that can get some good response as well. However most have not tried real engagement. Engagement is like mining it takes time, but it is profitable if you do your research and carefully follow the vein.
Social media gives you the company the ability to reach right into a person’s living space and have a discussion. Why aren’t you using it for that?
I was just reading an article about how we need to use the social media channels more for customer support than we do for generating new leads. I would suggest that the answer is not just one, but both. There are millions of people out on the internet and they are longing to engage. So engage them.
Hire an individual or a company who posts for you, who chats for you, who uses groups on LinkedIn and who monitors the chatter. Find out what people are saying about you, about your industry and about your competition and engage in the chatter in a public and in a private way. Recommend others who have valuable services and then watch in surprise and delight as they respond by recommending you or even by purchasing your offering.
Yes it takes some time and some money, but when real engagement begins to happen with real people then real sales will begin to happen.
My colleague pointed out that people don’t want to be “sold.” He is right. But imagine if people were “told” while conversation was happening naturally about how awesome your service is. Not that would be “gold!”
