Is it just me or is there a new social media channel six times a day? Then there are 25 tools available a day as well. It is really hard to know which ones have any value.

I often examine new ones when clients have a question or if it is recommended as useful by someone else in the industry. Sometimes I even have a team of people try out one. This week I had a client mention Empire Avenue. At first glance it seemed like a game and I was not impressed. I did not want to waste time with it. But my client is a Calgary man of business and finance so I figured I should have a deeper look. He is not one to mess around. So I filled in the profile information, added all of my social media sites and had a look around.

It was definitely good for my ego. It gives you a basic share value and because I do some serious social media it doubled my value in less than 24 hours. So I guess I am a good investment.

It also gives a score to your social media activity. So it is a bit like having a Klout score or using www.howsociable.com but it goes further by allowing others to interact with you based on whether they think you are a decent investment risk.

The surprise was the sudden increase of traffic to my Twitter, website, blog and Facebook page. Not huge numbers but noticeable engagement. I also got a new connection on LinkedIn that may become profitable. Ok that has me continuing to examine it to see if it could be used in an innovative strategy. For now I will play along. If it pays off, I will post some more about it.

We will see if it helps in marketing here in Calgary or if it gives one a wider influence for creative internet marketing.
